mHWLCEUMV5QgxW5mCfQrw0gAnyone who is enamored of great advertising or copywriting or the power of print — or VWs, for that matter — should read this terrific piece in Volkswagen’s house organ, Das Auto.

The power of those early VW ads in the late 1950s and early 1960s are often credited with VW’s meteoric rise from weird little niche car to one of the most popular cars in the country, not to mention the rest of the world. The VW Beetle defined the 60s. If you want a cultural reference point for the counterculture, look no further than the bug.

Amir Kassaei explains the power of this advertising and its incredible staying power. Even after a half-century, those who know and study advertising, know this ad and the power of the generation’s best ad campaign. Give it a read.
